API (Application Programming Interface)
A way for two software systems to talk to each other. APIs are how your scheduling tool sends data to your accounting software, or how an AI service connects to your existing systems.
Why You Should Care
You'll never need to build an API, but understanding what they are helps you ask better questions when evaluating software. When a vendor says their product "integrates with QuickBooks," they mean it uses an API to exchange data.
Key questions to ask:
- Does this integrate with my existing tools?
- Is the integration real-time or does it sync on a schedule?
- What happens if the connection breaks?
