Automation
Using technology to perform repetitive tasks without human intervention. Can range from simple rules ('send a reminder 24 hours before an appointment') to complex AI-driven workflows.
Automation vs. AI
Not all automation is AI, and not all AI is automation. A simple email auto-responder is automation but not AI. A system that reads invoices and categorizes expenses uses AI but also automates a manual task.
The distinction matters when you're evaluating tools. Sometimes a simple automation is all you need, and paying for AI is overkill.
Where to Start
The best automation targets are tasks that are:
- Repetitive: you do them the same way every time
- Time-consuming: they eat up hours per week
- Low-judgment: they don't require much creative thinking
- Error-prone: manual handling leads to mistakes
