Automation

Using technology to perform repetitive tasks without human intervention. Can range from simple rules ('send a reminder 24 hours before an appointment') to complex AI-driven workflows.

Automation vs. AI

Not all automation is AI, and not all AI is automation. A simple email auto-responder is automation but not AI. A system that reads invoices and categorizes expenses uses AI but also automates a manual task.

The distinction matters when you're evaluating tools — sometimes a simple automation is all you need, and paying for AI is overkill.

Where to Start

The best automation targets are tasks that are:

  1. Repetitive — you do them the same way every time
  2. Time-consuming — they eat up hours per week
  3. Low-judgment — they don't require much creative thinking
  4. Error-prone — manual handling leads to mistakes
